Social Security Commission To Hear From All Sides

September 4, 2001

The President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security will hold a day-long hearing on Thursday, Sept. 6, in San Diego at the Marriott Hotel and Marina. The hearing will take place in two sessions, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. A total of six panels representing widely diverse viewpoints will present testimony to the Commission. Among those tentatively scheduled to appear are:

Panel 1: The Need for Reform

  • Robert Bixby, executive director, Concord Coalition.
  • Panel 2: Government Investment in the Stock Market or Personal Accounts?

  • John Shoven, professor of economics, Stanford University.
  • Panel 3: Social Security Reform and Women

  • Lisa Maatz, acting director, Older Women's League (OWL).
  • Eloise Anderson, director, Program for the American Family, Claremont Institute.
  • Panel 4: This panel will feature eight members of the public testifying for five minutes each.

    Panel 5: Other Perspectives and Experiences

  • Valerie Vandeweghe, benefits administrator, City of San Diego.
  • Panel 6: Think Tanks and Public Policy Advocates

  • Roger Hickey, co-director, Campaign for America's Future.
  • Peter Ferrara, senior policy advisor on Social Security, Americans for Tax Reform.
  • E. Percil Stanford, member, board of directors, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
  • David John, senior policy analyst, Social Security, the Heritage Foundation.
  • Additional witnesses will likely be added.
