September 28, 1999

Solving the Global Pension Crisis II: The Privatization Revolution, the follow-up to the successful international conference held in London in December 1997, is now scheduled for March 9-10 in New York. Once again, the Cato Institute and The Economist magazine will be cosponsoring the event.

The conference participants will evaluate the experiences of countries that have privatized government pension plans, examine more recent moves toward privatization, and look at issues for the future both in the United States and abroad. Invited speakers include:

  • Ed Crane, Cato Institute
  • Clive Crook, The Economist
  • Jose Pinera, President, International Center for Pension Reform
  • Sun Jianyong, Director, Rural Social Insurance Department, Peoples Republic of China
  • Milton Ezrati, Chief Investment Officer Nomura Capital Management
  • Scott Cook, Chairman, Intuit Corporation
  • Olivia Mitchell, Professor of Insurance and Risk Management, Wharton School
  • Leszek Balcerowicz, former Finance Minister, Poland
  • Felipe Ortiz, President, APOYO Institute, Peru

"These days, the eyes of Cato officials are gleaming at the prospect that privatizing Social Security, a project on which the 24-year-old think tank has worked for years, may be coming to fruition. If privatizers can overcome a few problems that worry their own supporters, it could be a bold new future, with Cato ideas leading the way."
